Brian Cookson, C.A.

As President of RDP, Brian has been assisting a wide variety of companies obtain R&D tax credits for over 20 years worldwide. Brian initiated and grew RDP’s practice in Canada, United Kingdom and the United States. He has lectured and written extensively on R&D tax credits including SR&ED, and has presented seminars to industry groups and tax conferences. Brian’s role is to ensure RDP is providing value added service to its clients. Brian also consults with companies that have significant R&D tax credit issues and negotiates on behalf of clients with government representatives. Brian is a chartered accountant and worked with Ernst & Young in their high-tech services group from 1982 to 1987.




Arne Luik, C.A. MBA

As Vice President of RDP, Arne has focused his efforts on SR&ED tax credits exclusively since 1999. Arne is a chartered accountant and MBA and has extensive experience in the high-tech industry with IBM as a Systems Engineering Representative, and National Systems Testing Laboratories as a Technical Representative. Arne has written and edited several articles on SR&ED, government assistance and financing.

Arne has also assisted companies with respect to corporate finance, tax matters and strategic planning.

Andrea McPhail

Andrea graduated with a B.Sc.Hons. in Astronomy & Astrophysics from the University of Toronto in 2004. At U of T she participated in research studies in the field of astronomy and physics. She also holds a minor in Biology. Prior to joining RDP, Andrea held a project management position in the growing field of online interactive. Her background with web-based interactive software development facilitates understanding of a variety of technologies resulting in technically comprehensive submissions. Specializing in the software development field, Andrea has successfully submitted and defended hundreds of SR&ED claims. In addition, she has prepared claims in the areas of manufacturing, hardware design, food, tool and die, agriculture, biomedical devices, electrical devices, and textiles.




Jeff Laks

Jeff Laks has over 20 years experience as a high tech executive holding senior management positions in R&D at Newbridge Networks, Linmor Technologies, Mitel Corporation and Norlite Technologies. For the past 9 years, Jeff has been an SR&ED consultant based in Ottawa where he has assisted over 300 Canadian and UK companies successfully obtain R&D tax credits. Although specializing in software claims, Jeff has prepared claims for many diverse industries including manufacturing, electronics, telecommunications, food, agriculture, biomedical, pharmaceutical, textiles, automotive, aeronautics, retail and financial.

Jeff has been involved in various industry and government committees relating to R&D tax credits and served as an expert panel member on Revenue Canada’s IC97-1 “Administrative Guidelines for Software Development”. Jeff holds a Bachelor’s degree in Honours Electrical Engineering, a Master’s degree in Computer Science and is a member of Professional Engineers Ontario.


David Smith

David Smith has over 30 years experience in the high-tech industry in Canada. He has worked with some of the premier high-technology companies in Canada, such as Nortel Networks and PMC-Sierra, in both semiconductor R&D and manufacturing roles.

David has been a high-tech consultant in Vancouver for 12 years, and has helped launch several start-ups, and also aided in market research and product development in many small companies. He has extensive experience in SR&ED tax credit applications and analysis, with particular expertise in electronics and electrical equipment, and application software in financial systems infrastructure.

David received his Master of Applied Science in Solid-state Electronics from the University of Toronto in 1978 and his Bachelor of Applied Science (Honours Electrical Engineering) from the University of British Columbia in 1976.


Nick Coulthard, MASc.

Nick is our Director of Operations in the UK and one of our Technical Managers in Canada. Prior to joining RDP, Nick held positions in clean tech, brewing, and waste management industries.

Nick assists RDP clients in both the UK and Canada with the preparation and review of R&D tax credit claims, including establishing project eligibility, preparing project descriptions, collecting financial data, and defending these claims to HMRC and CRA. Nick has prepared and filed hundreds of successful R&D claims that cover a range of technology in areas such as plastics, food, chemicals, automation, custom machinery, automotive, as well as software and telecommunications.

He graduated with a Master’s of Applied Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of Toronto having also completed the collaborative program in Environmental Engineering.


Christine Tzimika

Christine is our Senior Financial Analyst and Digital Media Tax Credit Specialist for the past three years. Christine’s role and responsibilities include assisting clients with the preparation of their cost allocations for SR&ED and OIDMTC tax credit claims, establishing payment eligibility, collecting data and defending claims with CRA. Christine works closely with RDP’s technical department to ensure that our client’s labor and capital costs are allocated effectively to maximize their claims.

Christine is currently pursuing her CA designation.
